Locatr finds the places in the links that you share with it and puts them on your map. This policy tells you which data Locatr uses for this, who receives it, and what your rights are.

Who is responsible

Nils Fischer, Germany, is the controller for the data described here. Email locatr@nilsf.de for any privacy question or request.

Your account

Locatr has no sign-up. On first launch, it makes a guest account with a random identifier. It does not ask for your name, email address, or phone number. To keep you signed in, the server stores a session for this account, with the IP address and the device type that started it. A session ends after one year without use.

The links you share

When you share a link, your phone loads the page, as a browser does, so the website or app that hosts it receives your IP address and device type. Your phone then sends the link and what it read (for example the post text, captions, subtitles, images, and video) to Locatr's server. The server can load the page again.

To find the places, the server sends this content to Google Gemini and to Typesafe, two AI services, and looks up the places with Apple Maps and Google Places. Locatr tells you this, and asks you to agree, before you share your first link.

Locatr stores which links you shared and which places you saved, so that it can show your library. It stores each link once, with its public preview (title, author, and image) and the places found in it. If two people share the same link, both see the same places.

Your location

If you allow location access, Locatr uses your location on your phone, to show where you are on the map. Locatr does not send your location to its server. The map comes from Apple Maps, so your phone loads map data from Apple. If you open a place in Google Maps or Naver Map, that app receives the place.

Notifications

If you allow notifications, Locatr sends your phone's push token with each link you share, so that it can tell you when the places are ready. The token is used for that notification and is not stored with your account. Expo's push service delivers the notification through Apple.

Crash reports

Release builds send error reports and performance measurements to Expo (EAS Observe), so that we can find and fix problems. Locatr has no advertising and no product analytics.

Email

If you email us, we use your message and address to answer you, and delete them when the request is closed, unless the law requires us to keep them.

Who receives your data

Some of these providers process data outside the European Union. For these transfers we rely on the EU–US Data Privacy Framework where the provider is certified, and otherwise on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses in the provider's terms. Email us for a copy.

Why we may use your data

We use the data above to provide the service that you ask for when you share a link (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). We use crash reports and session data because we have a legitimate interest in an app that is secure and works (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Location and notifications are used only with your permission (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR). You can withdraw it at any time in iOS Settings; this does not affect what we did before.

You do not have to give us any data. Without the links you share, Locatr cannot find places, and without location access the map does not show where you are.

How long we keep it

We keep your shares and saved places until you delete your account. To delete it, open Settings in Locatr and tap Delete account. This deletes your account, your sessions, your shares, and your saved places at once.

The links themselves, with their public preview and places, stay in the shared store, because other people can share the same link. After deletion, they have no connection to your account. If a stored link contains information about you and you want it removed, email us and we delete it.

Crash reports and server logs are kept by the providers above for the retention periods in their terms.

Your rights

You have the right to see the data we have about you, to correct it, to delete it, to limit its use, to receive a copy of it, and to object to its use. Email locatr@nilsf.de to use these rights. You can also complain to a data protection authority, for example the one where you live.

Changes

If Locatr starts to use data in a new way, we update this page and its date first.
